The letter from the permanent representatives of Japan and Senegal presents the summary report of the First Preparatory Meeting for the Second Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD II), held in Dakar on 2 and 3 March 1998. The report, entitled “Sustainable Development and International Economic Cooperation: Renewal of the Dialogue on Strengthening International Economic Cooperation for Development through Partnership,” was prepared to serve as a basis for formulating a preliminary draft of the Agenda for Action for the second meeting of the Preparatory Committee to be held in Harare in June 1998. The main message of the report concerns revitalised growth in poverty alleviation and strengthening African participation in the global economy.
